EL BAILONGO, COLONIA

Her early works were born from a deep love for colours. Although clumsy, they carried within them a raw sincerity, an attempt to sublimate the everyday through art. Critics had often called her works “naive” or “too colourful,” but since Catou didn’t claim to belong to a specific artistic movement, she didn’t pay attention to what they said at the time. Despite her passion for colours and painting, she was often assailed by doubt. It was a period of intense questioning. Catou told herself that mistakes were part of the creative process and she didn’t hesitate to start over and over again until she felt that the work was right. Over time, her view of her early works has evolved. She see a kind of purity in them, where each brushstroke was a way of transforming her emotions into something tangible and beautiful.
